A mechanical dock leveler is pull-chain operated with spring assist, needs no electricity, and costs less to buy and own — best for low-frequency docks or sites without reliable power.
How They Differ
The core difference is the lifting mechanism. Hydraulic levelers use an electro-hydraulic power unit (1.25 hp BUCHER/EP or 0.75 kW HYDR-APP) to raise the platform and extend the lip in one smooth motion. Mechanical levelers use a torsion-spring counterbalance: the operator pulls a chain, and stored spring energy lifts the platform and deploys the lip.

How to Decide
Choose hydraulic if your dock handles more than ~30 truck movements per day, if operator ergonomics matter, or if you want push-button convenience. Choose mechanical if the dock is used infrequently, if there is no reliable electricity at the pit, or if you want the lowest possible purchase and operating cost.
